View dashboards

Use Build > Dashboards to view your account's custom metrics, organized by category. Create and edit the measurements under Dev tools > Custom metrics, not on the dashboard page.

Before you begin

  • Your account needs custom metrics to display. Built-in metrics are available separately through Build > Observability and the metrics API.
  • Check the canonical metrics permissions. Viewing a dashboard does not grant metric-management or trace-inspection access.

See Role-based access control for role configuration. These navigation instructions describe the developer Console.

View charts

  1. Open Build > Dashboards. You see charts for the account's custom metrics. If none exist, the page says that the account has no custom metrics yet. An authorized creator can follow Create one or open Dev tools > Custom metrics.
  2. Choose 24 hours, 7 days, 30 days, or Custom. The charts use the selected time window. A custom window must be no longer than 30 days.
  3. When the agent selector is available, select the agents you want to inspect. Read the scope rules below before treating every remaining chart as agent-specific.
  4. For an empty chart, check the metric's status, filter, and retained data in Dev tools > Custom metrics. A metric can exist before its first data is computed.

Understand the agent filter

The dashboard agent selector and the scope chosen when creating a metric have different effects:

  • A metric created for one agent counts only that agent's sessions. Selecting a different agent hides that metric's panel.
  • A metric created for all agents can be narrowed by the selector only if it has a dimension reading $.session.agent_key.
  • An all-agent metric without that dimension continues to show its account-wide value. Selecting an agent does not make it agent-specific.
  • Selecting multiple dimension values returns their combined series, not a separate series for each selected agent.

Choose the required agent dimension before creating the metric. Adding it later requires a new metric.

Investigate missing data

What you seeWhat to check
No custom metrics on the pageCreate a metric or ask an account administrator to create one.
A new metric has an empty chartCheck Backfilling, whether there are matching spans, and the chosen time range. Computation is asynchronous.
Historical bins appear incompleteBackfill can still be processing retained traces while recent data is computed.
A metric has Disabled statusNew data is not being computed. Previously computed data remains readable within retention.
A metric has Error statusInspect the error detail beside its status in the custom-metrics list.
An agent selection does not change a valueCheck whether the metric is account-wide and lacks an agent dimension.

See Lifecycle and backfilling before deleting and recreating a metric. Recreation is not a way to recover traces that are no longer retained.

Agent session analytics

For individual-run diagnosis rather than chart viewing, use Inspect agent runs.

Inspect a session in the Console

Follow the session inspection workflow to open Debug, expand events, and use View traces.

Retrieve traces and spans

See Retrieve traces and spans for API reads and their separate access requirements.
