Edit agent instructions

Use Agents in Business Suite to update instructions prepared by your development team. Instructions describe how the agent should behave.

Before you begin, ask a developer to prepare the instruction for Business Suite. For account setup, see Set up a Business Suite user.

Edit instruction text

The Template field contains instruction text and can also contain Velocity template syntax. If it includes variables or directives you do not recognize, ask the developer which parts to change before editing.

  1. Open Agents and select an existing agent.
  2. In Instructions, find the instruction you want to change. Use Expand if its text is truncated.
  3. Open the options menu beside the instruction and select Edit.
  4. In the Edit instruction dialog, change the Template text. The Title is displayed for reference and cannot be edited here.
  5. Select Save in the dialog to apply the text to the form.
  6. Select Save on the agent page to send the change to Vectara. Wait for the Agent saved confirmation.
Save the agent as well as the instruction

Saving the dialog only updates the form. The change is not stored on the agent until you select Save on the agent page.

The dialog does not accept an empty template. Select Cancel in the dialog to discard the text changes made in that dialog.

Enable or disable an instruction

Open the same options menu and select Disable or Enable, then select Save on the agent page. Disabled instructions display a Disabled badge.

Read-only or missing instructions

Instructions marked Read-only have no edit or enable/disable menu in this interface. Ask a developer to review the instruction's Business Suite setting.

This view is limited to instructions stored directly on the agent's starting step (inline instructions on its entry step). It does not show shared instructions linked by name (referenced instructions) or instructions from other steps. It also does not provide controls to add, rename, or delete instructions.

If saving fails, the change has not been confirmed. Ask your administrator to review Business Suite permissions and provide the error shown on the page.
